Breath in yoga is known as pranayama in sanskrit or “Life force”. 

 

 

Slowing down and noticing our breath at the beginning of practice allows us to find that mind-body connection. It allows us to be present in the moment, and to refocus our thoughts as they come back to the breath and the body. Just by bringing awareness to our breath, the breath automatically slows down. I use the breath as an anchor in our practice and in our life, as it is what keeps us going, it is something to focus on when things get distracted, and it brings us back to our centre. When was the last time you just paused and focused on your breath? Let’s look at the benefits of our breath within our yoga practice, and see how they stem outward into life. 

 

 

The breath helps to regulate our nervous system. By focusing on our breath we stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation and reduces stress. This can help lower heart rate and blood pressure, leading to a calmer state of being. And by changing your breathing rate can change your mood. By activating the parasympathetic nervous system through breath, it leads to relaxation, calm, and mental clarity. 

 

 

Deep, mindful breathing enhances oxygen intake and increases the body’s overall energy level. This is why certain breathing techniques are energizing, like kapalabhati (breath of fire), which invigorates the system and boosts alertness.

 

 

Maintaining awareness of the breath requires attention, helping improve concentration and mental clarity. This can be beneficial not just in yoga practice but in daily life, as it trains the mind to remain focused and resilient.

Deep, controlled breathing has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve mood. By practicing specific breathing techniques, you can manage your emotions more effectively and respond to stress with a greater sense of calm.

Pranayama techniques are said to help cleanse the body by expelling toxins and enhancing lung function. Controlled, deep breathing can improve the efficiency of the lungs, supporting better circulation and overall health.
